Free coloring page: A fruitful tree

Scan0007I’ve taken on doing the coloring pages for our church once a month (or more if they need me). This was my first week. Pastor is preaching on Psalm 1, and the godly man’s life.

I love taking a concept and trying to put it into a picture: It’s an allegory, an illustration. You don’t understand it just by glancing; there is a story woven into the lines and swoops of the pen.

Blessed is the man that walketh not in the counsel of the ungodly, nor standeth in the way of sinners, nor sitteth in the seat of the scornful. But his delight is in the law of the Lord; and in his law doth he meditate day and night. And he shall be like a tree planted by the rivers of water, that bringeth forth his fruit in his season; his leaf also shall not wither; and whatsoever he doeth shall prosper.

Scan0007-001The Christian life is one of work; taking the principles God provides for us in His word and applying them to everyday tasks and relationships. God does not demand of His people that they work for their salvation, but that they rest in His finished work in Christ; we serve Him because we love Him and want to obey Him, not to earn our salvation.

It is vain for you to rise up early, to sit up late, to eat the bread of sorrows: for so he giveth his beloved sleep.

But on the other hand, we are created for work. We are called to be fruitful for Christ, whether we’re washing dishes, driving, speaking with others, or building businesses. Our lives are not our own— we are to govern them according to God’s perfect, unchanging law. Take God at His word, and you’ll be surprised how He blesses it.

And it’s really exciting.

Find the recipe on my (other) blog!

Over on my other blog (where I post mostly allergy-free recipes), you can get this warm and comforting recipe for ‘everything free’ oatmeal cookies.

You know. When you tell people all your food allergies, they get wide-eyed and say “Can’t you eat ANYTHING?”

Yes. I can. See?

In Which She Ventures Into Watercolors

What does an artist do when she discovers that she has a hand-me-down box of watercolor paints?

She tries them out.

I’d never used them before. I have always used watercolor pencils– I like those because with them I can be detailed, and I love details. But I never could get the smooth texture I wanted….and I found them in these paints. IMG_8097-001There’s a first time for everything. Continue reading “In Which She Ventures Into Watercolors”

An Introduction

Welcome to Hearthside Studio!

I am a budding artist with a passion for creation, home, and art. I’m learning to use my talent to create something beautiful.

I believe in beauty. I love relationships and home-life, especially rural domesticity. I am working towards becoming an illustrator of books– children’s books, mostly. I love scenes depicting family unity, adventure, and the wonder of creation. I love seeing scenes coming to life under my brush, full of color and warmth and excitement. I want to make people’s homes beautiful with these things– by selling my art as cards, prints, and someday book illustrations.

With this website/blog, I hope to do several things. I will share my thoughts on learning to be a creator; what I learn as I delve into the world of using watercolor pencils and eventually other medium; the mistakes I make and how I should have avoided them; samples from my sketchbook; and maybe I’ll share sometimes my adventures in the more domestic realm of cooking (I cook gluten, dairy, and often sugar free).

I’m learning to live intentionally. I’m learning to take every second and use it to learn and grow and improve myself.

You can read more about me on my about page. I’m excited about today’s adventure– are you? IMG-004
